Lt. Duane Beeson

One of a handful of U.S. WWII Fighter Pilots to become an ace in two different types of aircraft, Duane Beeson, was originally assigned to RAF 71st Eagle Squadron and was later transferred to 334th Squadron, 4th FG. Until 1943, the 4th FG were assigned Supermarine Spitfire Mk VBs. While recently transferred, Duane Beeson embarked on a training mission to test fire the cannons on his Spitfire. He made a quick dash across the Channel to harass German ground troops. As he completed his first strafing run, he immediately took ground fire and quickly flew back to England for repairs.

Duane Beeson would later become a highly successful ace of the 4th FG in both the P-47 Thunderbolt and P-51B Mustang - both dubbed, "The Boise Bee". He would score air combat 22 victories with a strong record scoring multiple victories per mission.
