Pilot Officer W. 'Jock' Cunningham

Leader of 19 Squadron, Pilot Officer W. 'Jock' Cunningham was a key leader in repelling the German assault during the Battle of Britain. Flying the newly commissioned Supermarine Spitfire Mk 1, the pilots of the RAF were well matched to their adversaries piloting the Messerschmitt Bf 109 E-series.

During the massive air assault on September 15, 1940, Jock Cunningham, under Douglas Bader's Command, took 19 Squadron to meet the Germans at 15,000 ft. 900 aircraft created a melee over the skies of southern England. Cunningham would claim a victory that day over a Luftwaffe Bf-109.

Cunningham would later provide escort to the King and Queen of England as they visited 19Squadron to honor him with the Distinguished Flying Cross. Later that year, Cunningham was shot down over France resulting in a crash landing on the beach. He was taken prisoner and was interned for the remainder of the war...
